York Design Awards 2008 – Winners announced
Some of York’s most innovative and distinctive new and converted buildings were honoured at the York Design Awards ceremony last night (15th May).
Ten buildings from across the spectrum of residential, commercial, community/public buildings received an award in recognition of excellence in conservation and in outstanding distinctive contemporary design which will contribute to York’s great heritage.
Amongst those receiving an award were the National Science Learning Centre and the University Library & Archives both at the University of York, York College and Acomb Library Learning College. The Lord Mayor’s Award, a special accolade which was introduced this year, was presented for an extension to a private dwelling - Oak Cottage at Crockey Hill.
Launched in November last year, the competition was open to all new build and conservation, conversion and landscape developments within the City of York Council boundary completed between 1st January 2005 and 31st December 2007.
27 entries were received and judged by an independent panel with expertise in architecture, planning, sustainability, and conservation. The judging criteria included sustainability and context.
Ken Powell, chair of the judging panel said: “The standard of entries was very high this year the ten buildings have been awarded for distinctive design. Oak Cottage in particular addressed virtually all the criteria of excellence on which the awards were judged and it a superb example of what we are looking for. It is highly contextual, very well thought out and planned, with excellent workmanship. A model of sustainability it is how rural buildings should be extended. It is equally significant as a workplace, showing how new sources of employment can fit into the rural scene.”

Architects and clients: - Mr Chris Walker and Mrs Sally Walker
Judges Comments: this project addressed virtually all the criteria of excellence on which the awards were judged. It is highly contextual – an appropriate addition to an old building. It is very well thought out and planned, with excellent workmanship. And it is a model of sustainability. All for around £60,000. A model of how rural buildings should be extended. And equally significant as a workplace, showing how new sources of employment can fit into the rural scene.
